Is Gambling Legal in Poland?

Poland is one of the European countries with the most restrictive legislation when it comes to gambling. In essence, the state permits gambling and betting activities but with severe restrictions. There are a couple of reasons for that.

Firstly, Poland is geographically located in Central Europe. However, it was part of the former Soviet Bloc for a long time in the past. Thus, the country has inherited more of an Eastern mentality when it comes to gambling. Wagering activities were largely illegal under the Soviet regime. That is why there are still traces of negativity towards casino gambling in Poland’s otherwise modern society.

Another reason why the country is reluctant to relax its gambling laws is that it witnessed serious violations when it did so in the past. At one point, when casino regulations were more lenient, several scandals broke thanks to organized crime activities.

Nonetheless, you can still wager legally in Poland. For instance, there are about 15 licensed casinos, where you can enjoy roulette and table games. In addition, more than 50 slot halls offer slot machines only. Bingo, lotto, and sports betting are also allowed. Online casinos are illegal. You can only use the Internet to bet online on sports, raffles, and promotional draws.

Are Cryptocurrencies Available in Poland?

Cryptocurrencies are available in Poland. It is a technologically advanced country that is quick to adopt digital innovations. However, the Polish government does not view crypto as currency by the standard definition of law. Neither does it regard it as a financial instrument or a means of trade or exchange. That is why no specific regulation is imposed on the crypto market.

The latter is flourishing, nonetheless. Polish crypto users have at their disposal all the world’s most popular digital currency exchanges as well as over 80 Bitcoin ATMs.

What is more, the Polish government has given a clear signal that it is moving in the direction of a developed digital economy. In early 2022, Poland introduced the AML V Directive. It represents a series of judicial measures aimed at increasing transparency and allowing for additional protection of financial transactions.

Furthermore, Poland is part of the European Union. The latter has been trying to progress the EU Digital Finance Strategy across member states. That is why it is reasonable to believe that Polish crypto users are facing a bright and exciting future. Hopefully, all of these advancements will benefit local online gambling enthusiasts, too, by making Polish digital wagering platforms safer. Ultimately, this may result in more relaxed online gambling legislation.

History of Gambling in Poland

As we mentioned earlier, Poland’s gambling history has had its ups and downs. On one hand, the country is trying to shake off its Soviet past and become a modern-day, progressive state. On the other, former scandals in the area of gambling have left a lasting mark on both legislators and Polish society. That is why it is not surprising that the state is taking one step at a time when it comes to gambling regulations.

Officially, gambling became legal in Poland in 1920, with the Act on Gambling Games, much of which still regulates the local landscape. The piece of legislation was amended in 2009. Being overly restrictive, upon its introduction, the Act had a largely negative effect on Poland’s already existing gambling establishments. Many of them were unable to meet the severe licensing criteria and closed down.

To give you a more precise overview, nowadays, there are about 15 casinos in Poland, which is a country of approximately 38 million people. In contrast, its neighbour, the Czech Republic, boasts over 50 licensed casinos catering to a population of 10 million.

In 2011, online gambling also became legal in Poland. However, it is restricted to online betting, promotional lotteries, and draws. Online poker and online casino games are still illegal in the country.

Gambling in Poland Nowadays

Gambling, and especially online casino activity, is still highly restricted in Poland. The state has granted only eight online licenses since 2011. The small market results in a monopoly and a lack of competitiveness. Players suffer from a limited choice of games and bonus offers.

What is more, under Polish law, only companies owned by local citizens or permanently residing foreigners are allowed to obtain gambling licenses. Offshore online casino gambling is strictly prohibited. Locals who play at such online casinos are legally prosecuted. Some Polish betting sites have tried to circumvent the law by offering Internet casino games masked as sports wagering. All of this makes it hard for Polish users to enjoy quality online casino games. However, the adoption of cryptocurrency may have the power to change this situation.

Poland Players Favourite Games

Despite the rigorous legislation, Polish players still enjoy different wagering games. Slot machines are extremely popular in Poland. That is why there are 50+ licensed slot halls throughout the country. These establishments offer no gambling formats other than slot machines.

While land-based casinos are slightly over a dozen in Poland at present, they still provide a quality gambling experience. For instance, you can play roulette, poker, blackjack, and baccarat at such an establishment.

Bingo is also legal in Poland, and so are lotteries and draws. Many local players enjoy these simple, luck-based games that bring instant rewards. Sports betting is permitted in the country, too. This is great because the Polish are generally keen on sports. Polish players can enjoy hundreds of betting markets on football, tennis, basketball, horse racing, and more.

Cryptocurrency gambling has not been regulated by the state so far. However, local gamblers would likely enjoy playing their favourite games with digital currencies. The reason lies in the numerous advantages of crypto like anonymity, fast transactions, increased security and transparency, etc. Digital currencies can be used to play any of the above-mentioned games as long as the state would allow it.

Poland Players Preferred Bonuses

In a severely restricted market like the Polish, the situation with bonuses can get quite difficult. Lack of competition and limited game choice may lead to low-quality, insufficient bonuses with dubious terms. However, some Polish operators still try to provide players with world-class deals.

Generous cash matches and free spins are among the most sought-after promotions. Of course, players also look for no deposit and no wagering bonuses. Experts state that the adoption of cryptocurrencies in online gambling can increase the offering of better, more generous promotions for subscribers of all statuses.
